Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy — and one of the most treatable. Whether you are dealing with persistent worry that never quite lets up, social anxiety that makes everyday interactions feel exhausting, panic attacks that come out of nowhere, or work-related stress that follows you home, therapy can help you understand what is driving your anxiety and develop practical strategies to manage it.

In my practice on the Upper East Side, I take an interactive, personalized approach to anxiety treatment. I do not believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, I work with each individual to understand the unique constellation of thoughts, experiences, and patterns that fuel their anxiety. For many people, anxiety is deeply connected to the body — racing heart, shallow breathing, muscle tension — and I help clients recognize and work with these physical signals as part of the therapeutic process.

With over thirty years of clinical experience, I have worked with individuals across every stage of life who struggle with anxiety in its many forms: generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, performance anxiety, health anxiety, and the kind of chronic stress that comes from navigating high-pressure careers and complex relationships. My style is warm, engaging, and direct. I help clients move beyond simply coping with anxiety to understanding its roots and making lasting changes.

Anxiety does not have to define your daily experience. If you are ready to explore what is beneath the worry and build a more grounded life, I invite you to contact me to schedule a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

If anxiety is interfering with your daily life — your sleep, your relationships, your ability to concentrate at work, or your willingness to try new things — therapy can help. You do not need a diagnosis to benefit. Many of my clients come in simply feeling that worry or tension has become too large a part of their lives.

I draw from multiple evidence-based approaches, tailoring treatment to each individual. This may include cognitive-behavioral techniques, mindfulness-based strategies, psychodynamic exploration of underlying patterns, and attention to the mind-body connection. The goal is always practical relief alongside deeper understanding.

Many people begin to notice shifts within the first several sessions — a greater sense of awareness, new tools for managing anxious moments. Deeper, longer-term work depends on the nature and history of your anxiety. I work collaboratively with each client to set goals and adjust the pace of therapy as needed.

Anxiety is a natural human emotion, and the goal of therapy is not to eliminate it entirely but to bring it into proportion. Most clients find that therapy significantly reduces the intensity and frequency of their anxiety, gives them effective tools to manage it, and helps them understand the patterns that keep anxiety going.
